Journalist Yeganeh Salehi has been released from prison, though her husband, Jason Rezaian, remains behind bars. Salehi, a correspondent for United Arab Emirates newspaper The National was detained on July 22 along with Rezaian, who is a correspondent for the Washington Post. Revolutionary Guards arrested the couple at their home in Tehran, along with two of their guests, reportedly killing the couple’s caretaker during the arrest. The couple were held incommunicado, and the arrests were not registered with the judiciary or the prosecutor’s office. In September, IranWire reported that Rezaian was forced to confess.
According to the Washington Post, Salehi was released late last week and she was permitted to visit her husband over the weekend. He is reported to be in good health.
CNN chief international correspondent Christine Amanpour asked President Hassan Rouhani about the continued detention of Jason Rezaian, a dual Iran-US citizen, while the president was in New York to attend a UN General Assembly meeting. Rouhani denied that journalists were in jail in Iran in connection with their work.
