A student has died after setting herself on fire outside Sadara Azad University in Shiraz.
The woman, who has not been named, set herself on fire on Thursday May 7 in the university’s parking lot. She was taken to Ghotoboddin Shioraz hospital in a critical condition, and died on May 12.
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency and Jonub News, one eyewitness said that the student had doused herself in two liters of petrol before setting herself alight.
News about another self-immolation case broke in April, when a unlicensed fruit seller set himself alight in protest against harassment from local officials. But in the case of the Shiraz student, the tragedy does not appear to be linked to any social or political statement. The young woman intended to take her own life and had discussed her intentions on social networking sites.
University authorities refused to take responsibility for the death, stating that they could not have prevented the death because the parking area of the university fell outside their jurisdiction.
