A replacement bus carrying passengers to Sari after their flight was forced to change course to Tehran crashed in northern Iran on Tuesday April 21, killing 11 and injuring 18.
“The bus was transporting the passengers from a plane that had been traveling from Mashhad to Sari but was forced to land at Mehrabad Airport in Tehran because of bad weather conditions,” reported the Iranian Students’ News Agency. “The accident happened at 8:30am on Tuesday morning on Firouzkuh Road in the Savadkuh region.”
According to Ali Nabiyan, the deputy head of developmental affairs in Mazandaran province, faulty brakes caused the incident.
Nabiyan said, “The trigger was brake failure, which caused the bus driver to lose control, crash into the mountains and roll over,” Boyer News reported.
“Judging from the intensity of the collision, it’s likely that more people will lose their lives,” he added.
“The Mahan Air flight was carrying 27 passengers and was meant to land at Sari airport at 1:00 am on Tuesday morning but couldn’t because of terrible weather conditions, despite the plane circling Sari airport several times.“ Reza Ahmadi, director of public affairs at Sari international airport, told Boyer News.
“This meant that the pilot was forced to land at Mehrabad Airport in Tehran. However all the passengers were completely fine before they got on the bus to Sari.”
Sari News reported that Mahan Air Company denied responsibility for what happened to the passengers on the basis that they had chosen to board the bus to Sari.
