Revolutionary Guards arrested 84 people at a party on January 17.
Responding to complaints from members of the public about a “mixed-sex party in District five of Salman,” the intelligence department of Mashhad’s Revolutionary Guards conducted surveillance operations on the premises where the party was being held. “After confirming the report, forces carried out a surprise raid on the venue, arresting 43 man and 35 women dancing together,” the Khorasan Revolutionary Guards website reported.
For young party-goers in Mashhad, Saturday’s arrests will be a reminder of a similar raid two years ago (see photo above). Following those arrests, Fars News Agency, which is affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards, published photographs of the arrested youths in handcuffs.
Mashhad Guards said its commander arranged permits so that officers could enter the party. Judiciary officials approved the measure.
The Guards website published reports that officers found “five full bottles of alcoholic spirits, 20 empty bottles and three sets of playing cards” at the party.
