The offices of 17 satellite television channels operating under the name “Shiite” were shut down on January 4.
“The enemies had set up 17 satellite TV channels under the name Shiite. Their offices inside the country were shut down by the Islamic Republic,” said deputy intelligence minister Mohammad Pourfallah.
“There may be fatwas issued by clerics in Qom but what we follow are the orders of the Supreme Leader,” he said. “We insist that any hostility between the Shiites and Sunnis is haram [forbidden to Muslims].”
The official did not disclose the specific names of the satellite channels or the location of their offices.
The Iranian Intelligence Ministry said its forces also shut down the offices of a number of foreign-based channels across Iran last August due to their “illegal activities.”
