Teen in Hospital after School “Punishment”

In the fourth incident in a month, a student has required medical attention after being assaulted by a teacher.

The headmaster of a school in Ganaveh near the country’s southern port, who also teaches at the school, punished a group of students who had underperformed academically by hitting them with a hose. He called each student into the courtyard for punishment. The headmaster’s deputy warned students not to say anything about the incident.

But three days later, a 15-year-old boy who had been punished by the headmaster complained of a swollen hand. He was later taken to Amiralmomenin Hospital in Ganaveh, where he received treatment for swelling and infection. However, his injuries were considered to be so serious that he was later taken to a hospital in Shiraz.

A student in Tehran was also taken to hospital after being punished by a teacher. And, in Sistan-Baluchistan, a student was taken to the hospital after a teacher hit him with a gas pipe.

The recent incident is thought to be the second in Ganaveh, the first being unreported by the media due to intervention by a headmaster.

According to the public relations section of the region’s Department of Education, the case will be thoroughly examined once medical treatment has been completed. As yet, the family has not filed a legal or official complaint.  “Our son’s health is our first priority,” the student’s parents said.
