One-quarter of the area of Gorgan Bay, the largest in the Caspian Sea, has totally dried up. Gorgan Bay, with its abundant waters, has provided a haven for ports such as Gaz and Turkmen, but its mismanagement has led to a drought in the area going back several years. The constant leakage of domestic and industrial waste and other pollutants into this protected area has exacerbated the environmental disaster under way.
