Several provinces across Iran were hit by massive floods in spring 2019, just as Iranian families were preparing for the Norooz holidays. In Khuzestan province, floods caused huge damage. But the floods also resulted in 90 percent of the Shadegan wetland draining, which led to an increase in the area’s flamingo population. According to a recent census by the Shadegan Environmental Protection Agency, the flamingo population of Shadegan Lagoon is currently between 6,000 and 7,000, and the breeding season has recently begun, fuelling hopes of even more growth in the population.
