Iranians turned out in their hundreds of thousands to mark the death of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, who died on Sunday, January 8. From the early hours of the morning of January 10, people headed for Revolution Square to attend the ex-president's funeral. Rafsanjani was a towering figure in Iranian politics for decades. He was influential in the early days of the revolution, with close links to Ayatollah Khomeini and an important say in the country's policies. More recently, he was praised by some for his support — however reserved — for the Green Movement.
