Despite the open support expressed by Iran’s Supreme Leader and senior officials in the Islamic Republic for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, many Iranians inside the country have voiced their own, private opposition. Earlier this week, a group of Tehran residents gathered in front of the Ukrainian Embassy – the Russian Embassy was under heavy armed guard – to chant “Death to Putin”, “The Russian Embassy is a nest of spies” and the more all-encompassing slogan, “Long live peace”.
