Photos published by ISNA news agency have shed light on the phenomenon of people sleeping on buses in Tehran at night, in many cases by choice. According to Iranian media reports, it costs between 12,000 and 25,000 tomans (up to US$0.90) to spend a whole night on a given bus route and many have ended up doing this in lieu of a rented home. Many are either laborers or work as peddlers during the daytime. A smaller number are outright homeless or drug users.
