Iran is currently marking the holy month of Muharram, which commemorates the death of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. During the first Friday of Muharram, ceremonies take place across Iran to mourn children who have died. Mothers of young children commemorate Ali al-Ashgar, the imam’s youngest son and the youngest person to have died at the Battle of Karbala, by dressing their children in clothes symbolizing his tragic untimely death.
Muharram is one of the holiest months of the year for Shia Muslims.
