Iran women’s beach football league has set up two teams in Iran — one in the northern province of Mazandaran province and the other in the south, in Hormozgan province. Women spectators will be allowed to attend matches for free, a welcome change for female fans, who have repeatedly faced bans when trying to attend football and volleyball matches. Women have regularly protested against the discrimination, and, when several women were arrested for protesting outside Azadi Stadium in Tehran — among them, Iranian-British national Ghoncheh Ghavami — it made international headlines.
Iranian authorities have given no indication that female fans will be allowed to attend other live sporting events.
