Iranians have brought goldfish into their homes for Nowruz for centuries, regarding them as a symbol of the seven sins of man. But in recent years, animal rights campaigners have raised awareness of the ritual's cruelty because the fish are usually not kept beyond the holiday season. Despite activists' efforts, the practice continues and goldfish sales remain healthy.
