Residents of Tehran have endured dangerous levels of air pollution over the last few days, posing health risks to the general public and causing serious concerns for people with respiratory conditions, the elderly and the very young.
Environmental officials issued a “red warning” after concentrated amounts of toxic pollution were recorded in the capital in mid-December. The warnings are becoming increasingly common, as Tehran struggles with poor air quality and insufficient measures to deal with even more traffic on the roads, much of it thought to be powered by unclean gasoline.
