Hopes were dashed this week that “Down with USA” sentiments could finally be on their way out. Thousands of Iranians marked the anniversary of the 1979 US embassy takeover as they do every year: Proudly displaying banners with anti-American and Israel slogans, taking part in large rallies, flag-burning and showing their unwavering loyalty to the supreme leader. Children are even encouraged to do their bit, producing anti-American drawings and taking part in protests.
