Iran is currently marking Muharram, one of the holiest months in Shia Islam. Throughout the month, devoted Muslims commemorate the death of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. One ceremony, which takes place on the first Friday of the month, mourns children who have died. Mothers of young babies pay tribute to Ali al-Ashgar, the imam’s youngest son and the youngest person to have died at the Battle of Karbala, by dressing their children in clothes that symbolize his untimely death.
