Tehran’s appalling air pollution is back. Pollution-related illnesses, including respiratory disease and a range of cancers, are on the rise, and thousands of people die each year due to the toxic atmosphere. In recent years, residents have campaigned in Tehran, Isfahan and other cities for the right to clean air. Protests also erupted in Iran’s western provinces over the winter, as polluted dust storms made daily life increasingly unbearable.
