Artists, writers and prominent Iranian cultural figures turned out to pay their respects to poet and literary critic Mohammad Ali Sepanlou on May 14, two days after his death in Tehran. He was 75.

Sepanlou was a co-founder, editor and executive board member of the famous Writers Association of Iran, which was originally launched as a protest against “official,” government-backed culture promoted by the Shah’s regime. The association continues to oppose censorship today, and to promote artistic freedom.

Sepanlou graduated from Tehran University’s Faculty of Law in 1963. He is the father of the well known singer Shahrzad Sepanlou.
