Goldfish have been an important part of the Persian new year celebration for decades. An important part of the traditional Norooz festive table display, the fish symbolize life and are particularly popular with Iranian children. Every year, as the holiday approaches, goldfish merchants enjoy a huge boost in sales. But in recent years, environmental and animal rights activists have spoken out against the treatment of the fish. Although they can live for many years, often they are kept in such poor conditions that they die only days after the holiday celebrations have come to a close.
