Pupils from Tehran’s Motahhari School embarked on a Rahian-e Noor Tour today, traveling to southern Iran to visit some of the Iran-Iraq war’s most important battlegrounds. The “From School to School” initiative encourages students to visit the former frontlines, partnering with a school in the region. The program has been praised by many because of its educational value, but has also faced criticism, with some arguing that the tours — Rahian-e Noor means “path of light” — are being used to reinforce support for the Basij paramilitary forces and spread propaganda about the war, which the regime casts as a heroic and victorious event for Iran, despite the fact that approximately one million Iranians lost their lives during the conflict. Due to poor roads, there have also been a number of fatal traffic accidents since the tours began, causing further controversy.
