If you’re a woman visiting Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, certain rules apply. And the hejab many Iranian women wear in their daily lives just won’t do. Mehr News photojournalist Marziyeh Heydarzadeh’s project “An Experience” juxtaposes photographs of women outside the holy site: the first shows them in casual, colorful, trendy headscarves, sometimes pushed back well off the face; in the second photo, the same women are seen ready to enter the building, wearing decidedly more conservative versions of the mandatory hejab, provided by staff at the shrine.
