In August 2012, two powerful earthquakes struck northwestern Iran, killing and injuring hundreds of people and devastating villages in the region, including Varzaghan, pictured here. The village is still being rebuilt, and many living there face continued hardship, despite support from humanitarian organizations. Though Iran’s emergency council confirmed 253 deaths as a result of the tremors, the health ministry estimates the loss of life to be somewhere closer to 306. Figures for the damage done to homes and buildings also vary. Some estimates place the cost of damage to be somewhere around 1,079 billion rials.
