Tasnim has become the first Iranian news outlet to introduce gender segregation. In a statement last week, the agency said it was introducing the new-style newsrooms as a sign of respect for Muslim women in the workplace. Tasnim, which aims to combat “negative media propaganda” against the Islamic Republic and report the latest news, also published photographs of the new office environment—but women journalists and editors were eerily absent from the photos, apparently asked to step out of the room while they were being taken. Although Tasnim is the first news agency to segregate male and female employees, other news outlets are expected to follow suit.
