City waste disposal sites provide a necessary source of income for some people in Iran. People routinely collect plastic, glass, metal, paper and bones, selling them on to recycling facilities to earn around $6-7 per day. It’s a dangerous profession, since, in many city dumps, there are no official health and safety standards for waste disposal. Rubbish collectors handle potentially hazardous material, including waste from hospitals that has not been treated. Birds who use the sites as feeding ground spread bacteria, germs and disease.
