The Karun River was once the life source of the fertile plains of Khuzestan, nourishing the people of the province and the local environment alike. But years of populist, destructive environmental and water management policies have reduced it to a husk, with calamitous consequences. These images show the changing face of the Karun: as a place to bathe and to play, as nurturer of plant and animal life, and of late, as a symbol of unfathomable loss.
