Ruhollah Barazideh, the unemployed son of an Iranian war martyr, died on Thursday two days after setting himself on fire in front of the offices of the Foundation for Martyrs and Veterans’ Affairs in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province.
The 38-year-old was transferred to Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Yasouj after the self-immolation, and after receiving some treatment there, he was sent to Amir Al-Momenin Hospital in Shiraz.
Hamshahri Online quotes Dr. Mehdi Aslani, Ruhollah Barazideh's doctor, as saying Barazideh had suffered 86 percent burns and severe damage to his airways. He had died, the doctor said, while on a mechanical ventilator.
Staff at the Foundation said Barazideh had first tried to jump off the roof of the building in a desperate move understood to be prompted by poverty. Officials claimed they had offered him a loan before he returned and set fire to himself.
Barazideh was married and leaves behind three children. His is the sixth suicide linked to unemployment to have made the news in the last few months.
