Gholamhossein Esmaili, spokesman for the Iranian judiciary, has announced that more than 200 judiciary staff members, 161 lawyers and a number official registrars have been arrested after probes into their conduct.
In a news conference on Tuesday, May 11, Esmaili added that more than 1,000 judges have been dismissed from their jobs after investigations into their record and conduct.
According to Esmaili, the judiciary’s security department has also “identified” a further 237 “collaborators with smugglers”.
In the past year the Islamic Republic judiciary, under Chief Justice Ebrahim Raeesi, has periodically reported that it has arrested a number of its corrupt employees.
Nevertheless, critics of the judiciary say these have only included mid-level officials, not former or current senior officials.
