More than 7,000 girls under the age of 14 were married in Iran in the spring of 2020, according to a report by the Statistics Center of Iran.
In a quarterly update on social and cultural conditions in Iran, the Statistics Center recorded the total number of girls aged between 10 and 14 who were married between March and May this year at 7,323.
The report also noted that one girl under the age of 10 and five boys under the age of 15 were known to have been married during this period.
Iranian law still permits the marriage of girls aged under 14 and a bill attempting to raise the legal minimum age has been repeatedly blocked in the Iranian parliament.
Between 2016 and 2019, the same report by the Statistics Center shows, some 130,000 girls aged under 14 were married as well as around 100 boys under the age of 15. The surge in child marriages recently is thought to be related to an increase in the amount of marriage loans available to families.
