The vigilante group Ansar-e Hezbollah, whose street violence and extremism have been largely absent from Iranian life in recent years, announced recently that it planned to renew its presence on the streets of Tehran. Associated with vigilante morality policing, the group is a more extreme parallel to the regime's Basij militia. The government of Hassan Rouhani pushed back against the announcement, saying that all groups planning street protests required official permission.
