Isfahan's outgoing public prosecutor announced this week that his province had conducted five hand amputations on prisoners in the last year. He said that the amputations had been carried out away from the public eye in order to avoid outcry from the international media. While Iran's judiciary has said it is seeking to retire such corporal punishments, individual judges across the country continue to mete out such sentences with impunity.
