During his presidential campaign, Hassan Rouhani asked Iranians who gone to exile fearing persecution in their homeland to return to Iran. Since Rouhani’s election as president in June 2014, many Iranians, including journalists, have returned to Iran, only to be arrested and imprisoned at the airport or a few days or weeks later. Recently, Seraj Mirdamadi, a journalist who was based in Paris, was sentenced to six years in jail because of his articles and his interviews in which he criticised the Iranian government.
