This report was written by an IranWire citizen journalist in Abadan
This is a local market in Abadan’s underprivileged Station 7 neighborhood. It has not been repaired since the 1980-88 war between Iran and Iraq, when large parts of the city were destroyed or damaged by bombings. As you can see in the video, the roof of the market is in bad condition and looks as if it could collapse at any moment.
In winter, the marketplace is flooded with water. Besides the shopkeepers, who have not had much of a business since the surge in inflation over the last few years, most other vendors here are street peddlers who do not have social security insurance or any other source of income. If or when the roof of the bazaar falls down, it is possible they will not only lose their livelihoods, they could also lose a limb, or even their lives.
