Today, July 17, the Mandaeans of Khuzestan celebrate the first day of their new year, which they mark with a ceremony called karoon.
Mandaeans follow a gnostic religion with its roots in the fourth and fifth centuries, and have a solar calendar. Their religious rituals involve baptism by water, and the religion has links to both Judaism and Christianity.
They live primarily along the waterways of Khuzestan in Iran and parts of Iraq.
