In her first visit to Iran, the European Union’s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton met with President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and other officials, beginning a process of “bridge-building” between the EU and the Islamic Republic. Iran’s nuclear program and Syria are thought to be among the topics discussed during her two-day visit. The prominent EU official met with seven female activists on Sunday, including Narges Mohammadi and Gohar Eshghi, the mother of Sattar Beheshti, who was arrested for “actions against national security” in 2012 and died after allegedly being tortured.
